A few words from your House Captain’s, Riley and Brandon
In case you didn’t already know, MacKillop mission month is well and truly in action! Over the coming few weeks, we have plenty in store, and we hope to see everyone’s smiling faces participating throughout the month! Our mandate for the mission is “where you are, you will find God,” which is all about affirming God’s presence in our everyday life, and embracing the spirit and charismas of our founder, Mary MacKillop. Mary was someone who spent entire her life helping the neediest in our society, and she was a person that we can all aspire to live like. She lived a life of proud faith and demonstrated her love for God through her actions. Over the course of MacKillop mission month, we encourage everyone to live like Mary; compassionate, caring, forgiving and faithful.
Mary MacKillop, along with Father Julian Woods, founded the Sisters of Saint Joseph, an internationally run sisterhood that is entering its 150th year in action this year. There are Sisters of Saint Joseph located all across the globe, and they all strive to improve the living conditions of the society’s most vulnerable in places like Australia, Peru, East Timor, Ireland and New Zealand. The Sisters commit their lives to following the admirable work of Mary MacKillop and “reveal the hospitable heart of God”.
This month, we aim to support the Sisters by collecting funds and supplies to make up bags of basic life supplies for people leaving prison. More often than not, those departing prison leave with nothing more than the clothes on their backs, and are very likely to reoffend within the first 72 hours due to homelessness. These packs would improve their situation by giving them something to start off with, so they can hopefully get somewhere and eat a meal.
We ask each homeroom to simply bring one each of the following items- all travel sized so that they can fit inside a shoulder bag that is supplied.
- A towel or face towel
- Cake of soap or small shower gel
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Body lotion
- Small notepad
- 2 pre-stamped envelopes
- $60 donation per home room for a $30 Go Card, $10 phone card, $20 Woolworths voucher (don’t worry about buying these items, a cheque will be presented to the sisters so that they can purchase these)
$60 sounds like a lot, but really it is only $3 per person in your home room, and we are sure you can part with a hot chocolate or coffee for one day to seriously improve the life of someone who needs it most!!
Our annual students verse teachers touch football game is being run on Wednesday on the top oval, where we will also be selling our famous icy cups for just 50 cents! Also, on the final week of our mission, some classic primary school games will be played on Clairvaux Court so we can come together as a community and throw it back to the good times! Think tunnel ball, skipping, captain ball and more!
Thank you so much in advance for your participation and enthusiasm to support such a worthy cause. Hope to see you around!
Riley and Brandon.
